Steampunk recommendations?

So I have a friend who wants to get into steampunk, but it's not my fandom. Can anyone recommend some beginner/intro level books, comics, movies, games, whatever? I'll pass them along to him (and his boyfriend for future gift-giving enterprises).

Just going through some lists on Amazon, a few things that caught my eye were Girl Genius, the comic of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the movie "Steamboy," and the anthology "Extraordinary Engines."

Do they have to be good?
Wild Wild West and the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie seem like reasonably good examples.

I'm not enough of a fan of the genre to have particularly looked into it, but those two strike me as at least having steampunk'ish elements.

I'm actually looking to introduce him to *good* stuff, rather than schlock, but thanks anyway. :)

I assume you are talking about the steampunk aesthetic as opposed to the literary movement, which predates it by quite a while.

You could add the Secret Adventures of Jules Verne (I think that was the title) tv series, and the Young Sherlock Holmes movie.
For a sample of contemporary lit, The Steampunk anthology edited by VanderMeer is a good (if dark) collection.

I'm not sure what's going to take him more, but I'm going to try to expose him to both, if possible.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Ann & Jeff VanderMeer's "Steampunk" anthology

"Exhibition Hall" fanzine by Chris Garcia, James Bacon and Ariane Wolfe

Those are a good start.

I couldn't find the anthology when I looked at Borders, but I'm going to keep looking. Thank you!

Mind if I steal your entry and elaborate on it as a possible Conjecture 2010 panel topic?

Howl's Moving Castle. You should watch it too, just because it is magnificent.

The Difference Engine, by Sterling and Gibson.

And, though the Wild Wild West movie may not be Great Cinema, I thought it was a fun summer romp, and I think that's all it was trying to be.

Interestingly, I did get him The Difference Engine as a birthday gift. I was looking for Steamboy just 'cause it looked fun, but they didn't have it.

Thank you!
