Yep, we work. It's one of the holidays that we "bank" towards our full week off between Christmas and New Years.

No classes, but the college isn't closed, so they consider it banked as a floating holiday for us. Not a lot of staff take off because it's actually a quiet day, even with the kids on campus. I may take off Friday to get ready for Gaymas. :)

Oh yeah, it's still a work day here. In fact, we have the president visiting today so we're expecting to have a rally the troops meeting soon - somewhere between his having breakfast with our boss and then lunch with all the rest of management. I feel left out!

President of the company, or Obama? 'Cause if it's Obama, that really would suck. :)

The company CEO. We had a group meeting this morning and he mentioned that we could continue the conversation over lunch, and someone leaned over to inform him that the reservation was just for managers. He was obviously surprised so at least he didn't intend to leave us out. I was tasked with the taking the rest of the office to lunch, so now I'm looking for the expense forms.

We're working here. The company "enhanced" our benefits package last year. One of the changes was reducing our annual holidays from 10.5 days to 6.5, and MLK was one of the holidays that was eliminated.

Holy crap, really? What days did they actually let you keep?

We had a change up in our holidays...we lost Christmas Eve Day and New Year's Eve Day and gained MLK...so no work for me today.

I'm guessing you won't get the new Harvey Milk day?

We kept the big ones -- New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, 1/2 day Christmas Eve and Christmas. Before that, we had what was more like bank holidays, so we also had MLK, President's Day, Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving Friday. There were some actual enhancement, as we now get to accrue more annual vacation time based on our years of service, but the reduction in holidays negated most of that for me.

Bummer. One of the things I like about working in academia - a whole 10 days off around Christmas, plus a random day during spring break in March (alas, we don't get Labor Day off, as that's the big move-in weekend, but we do get Wednesday off for Thanksgiving).

I don't get any of the so-called "holidays" because my company is essentially a hourly billed consulting company. I guess because, if there's work available, we're supposed to do it. We only "get" the big holidays ashoemaker mentions and a few floating holidays to use when we choose.

Despite working here for ten years, my dad (who works for a university and gets everything off) is still incredulous that I don't get $minor_holiday off.

*sigh* Yes. And the partner was still in bed snoring when I left the house. I'm finding it hard to be enthused at being in the office today for some reason...
