After a little more research, I'm now QUITE happy I didn't get any of the Orson Scott Card novels my nephew wanted. *shudder* Fucking HOMOPHOBE. He'll enjoy the other stuff I got him better, I'm sure (although I still need to pick up some of the Harry Harrison novels I wanted to get him).

It was probably the military but they won't talk about it.

I was thinking something unspeakable from the darkest abyss but yeah they probably did it.

Oh, well, that, too. :)

Yeah, sorry, that one was my bad. That's what I get for eating at a hole-in-the-wall burrito place. :X

Alberto's? :P

From my observation, Card's one of those people who makes strong statements in a political/religious context, but is perfectly nice one-on-one -- he was LosCon's GoH the year Shaun Lyon was co-chair, with no issues I saw or heard about. This is not to say you should buy his books, but some of them are pretty good, and used copies don't send money his way. At least in his older work -- I've not kept up with all his most recent books -- that aspect of his beliefs doesn't particularly show, that I recall. (It's been a long time since I read some of them, though, and my worldview then was not what it is now, so I won't swear there's nothing I was oblivious to or have forgotten.)

Oh, I'm sure he's perfectly fine if you met him face to face, but now that I've read some of the things he's written, I wouldn't want to. I have issues with people who actively seek to deny me my little slice of equality (and sitting on NOM's board of directors is quite active, indeed).

Used books may be the way to go. I won't put a dime in his pocket.

You didn't know about Card?

I just found out exactly how bigoted. Very disappointing.

Interestingly, most of the people in the forums on his website think he's completely wrong on the marriage issue. It's kind of amusing to read. :)

I did, but hadn't corroborated anything until yesterday. Appalling.

When he was GoH at Boskone the same year Gaylaxicon was in town, we handed out educational flyers to let folks know about the "other writings" they might not have already been familiar with. We didn't win any friends on the concomm that year, but we explained that if you're going to invite a homophone to our back yard, you should expect a reaction.

Good for you! I'm very, very glad to hear you did that.

Heavily closeted homophobe, judging by his writing. I've never seen him write a heterosexual couple with anything resembling chemistry, but the 'buddies' seem to always be.. friendly.

Well he *is* Mormon, after all... :O

Not that I have terribly reliable gaydar, but he does ping pretty hard. Then again, I can think of a few straight men who do, too, so I would add salt liberally.

If he were? My god, that would be so incredibly sad and pitiful, and a testament to the fuck-upedness of the Mormons.

Yeah, Card's a nasty piece of work.

I had a similar experience this year. I couldn't bring myself to buy the Rick Hillier autobiography my father wanted. Fortunately, somebody else is getting it for him.

I know someone whose mother asked them to buy a Sean Hannity book. I think he needed a fainting couch. :)

I had no idea. Forewarned is forearmed!
