Hooray for MA!

Started off the day with good news - Massachusetts has ruled the ban on same-sex marriages to be unconstitutional. :D

I'll await its_just_me's invitation in the mail presently. (Can I be a bridesmaid?)

Posted in the LJ of another friend who celebrated this ruling:

Yes, but here's some things to think about.

It only takes a simple majority of both houses of Massachusetts' legislature and a simple majority of the voters to pass an amendment to the state constitution.

The Catholic Church has some MAJOR political pull in Mass.

The Speaker of the state House is a hunkering social conservative Catholic who is on record as strongly opposing same-sex marriage.

The governor is a Mormon who is also strongly opposed to SSM.

That bright point of light is lookin' mighty lonely and unstable surrounded by all that conservatism and an insanely easy-to-amend constitution...

Not to go around tossing buckets of cold water on everyone's party or anything...

Actually, I got bad information about the amendment process. It apparently has to be approved by two successive legislatures, then on to the voters. Don't know how much better that makes things, but it's not QUITE as bleak...
