Gay marriage in DC!

Thank you, DC! Now let's see if the hypocritical Catholics decide to screw the homeless because of it.

Not to burst the bubble... but DC laws have to be confirmed by Congress. It's not done until the law is ratified by congressional vote next March.

The Democratic leaders don't want to touch this topic (mainly because most of them are secretly against it but don't want to lose their constituents by saying so) and the Republican leaders are dead set and vocally against it.

You *could* get 90% of the representatives in our federal government to fight for equalizing the rights granted to domestic partnerships and/or civil unions, but only a handful will openly support same-sex marriage.

It's going to be a battle - one that distracts your city and our Congress away from more serious issues.

Actually, DC laws are not required to be approved by Congress, so this will likely go the way it went when DC City Council voted to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere - once the mayor signs it (which he's expected to before Christmas), if Congress (House, Senate and POTUS) doesn't act within 30 days (which they didn't then and aren't likely to now), it'll become law. Easiest to avoid the issue altogether. :) Opponents are threatening to get it on the ballot, of course, but we'll have to see what happens.
