Huh...

Did you ever stop to consider that "shipoopi," "smizmar" and "imzadi" all mean the same thing? Makes ya think...

Well... they mean roughly the same thing, but they've got different nuances of meaning. Shipoopi seems to be a pretty casual term - like the old song says, a girl can be yer shipoopi after only a couple of dates - whereas your smizmar is your One True Love, the person you'd die for and then come back from the Other Side to rescue.

Imzadi seems somewhere in between, or less specific. I think you could properly call either your shipoopi or your smizmar "Imzadi" if the circumstances seemed to call for it. If you called your shipoopi "Smizmar", you might provoke either unwarranted hope or frantic backpedaling. If you called your smizmar "shipoopi", it might go over well enough as a playful jest in private, but possibly not so well as, say, an introduction to your family.

Basically, what I think is:

Shipoopi = Baby
Imzadi = Darling
Smizmar = Beloved

Of course, "fonfon ru" means something even more subtly different... ;)

I love my friends! I think this made my day. (and now I really want to call my sweeties imzadi... and they'd get it too which is the best part)
