So where are the communities where we tell people how much they're loved and respected BEFORE they die?

Right here?
You have an amazing life and many accomplishments. Please don't die too soon and keep doing things.

Re: Right here?
Hee hee! Well thank you, but I wasn't actually fishing for compliments for ME.

I would like that you didn't die too soon, either. I still haven't met my lifetime quota of Lars Hugs yet. :)

Chris Pine in Star Trek. It's during the Kobiashi Maru scene.

Wow, it really doesn't look like him to me. Still, cute. :)

in real life everytime you have an opportunity. or at least that is how it should go.

doing it online would only make drama as others would become upset that no one mentioned them and still others would compare who got the most compliments and love.

of course you could just give shout outs on your journal

We need more of those.

I'm very sorry about your friend.

It's a darned good question. I think we've been programmed by society to not praise each other, to not tell others how much they are loved. Perhaps some homophobia, certainly fear of embarrassing others, who knows.

Not to belittle your valid question, but I also feel that communities such as the one you set up, and the one for Furp, fill a necessary function. We are story telling creatures, and remembering the good stories about someone is one of the best ways of memorializing them. Since many of his friendships were mainly online ones, an online memorial seems rather fitting. *shrug* Or perhaps I'm over-thinking things. Not that I ever do...

Found what I was thinking of, but it's a single-post meme, with currently 16 pages of comments, rather than a dedicated comm.

I thought that's what memes are for? You know, the "If you woke up in bed with me" memes and so on.

Sometimes groups of fan-friends will secretly create a community sort of like that, fill it with memories and compliments and artwork and fanfics in the recipient's favorite fandoms, and then open it up and let the person know it is there on their birthday.

You try to do that every day.

On that note, we've never met face-to-face, but I've always liked reading what you wrote on the SDMB and here :)
