William who?

Is it just me, or does that Honda commercial where they cut ruts in the road SUCK? I can only guess they were going for William Tell, but what they came up with was an atonal mess. It couldn't even charitably be said it's in the minor key, 'cause, you know, it still would SUCK. If I had gone to all that trouble and it was that wrong, I wouldn't be proud of it, and I wouldn't put it on national television. It makes me think Honda's run by a bunch of tone deaf morons.

It didn't make any sense to me. Sometimes that's the goal, to get your attention while not making sense, but I don't think it worked that way, either.

I can't imagine they all put that time and effort into it just to get it wrong. It annoys me every time I see it.

Odd how different people see the same thing and come away with totally different impressions. I think that particualar commercial is great. They're saying "hey, we're total car nerds!" - it's the corporate version of Jack Ass, if Jack Ass were made by smart guys instead of idiots. So what if it isn't symphony quality - they USED A CAR AS A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. HAHAHAHAH!!!

Plus it appeals to the infogeeky side of me - they encoded information IN A ROAD. EVERYTHING IS JUST DATA OR DATA STORAGE!

It was a cool idea... it was just piss-poor execution of that idea and a crappy commercial.

Oh, that part of it was keen, but they fucked it up - their output did not match the desired result parameters. As a tech god, you can understand how that's a fail. Plus, as an anal retentive perfectionist, I, for one, would NEVER have allowed those results to have been filmed. I'd have paved it over and tried again until I got it right. That's just me, though. :)

I had heard rumor about the road-song through some guerilla-marketing a few months ago, then when the commercial came on, I thought, oh cool, here it is...

The tune was so totally unrecognizable, that I thought they'd done a different song.

What was the point of the commercial?
  • To show how noisy it is inside a Honda?
  • To show that they lack any musical or mathematical skills?
  • To show how to destroy a road and make it susceptible to weather damage?

Honda: Epic FAIL.

The original concept was that it had to be a certain speed, and only in a car with the Civic's front-to-rear wheelbase.

It was a Civic commercial... so you'd assume they'd get both elements correct, leaving only the possibility that the person responsible for laying out the notches in the road was an idiot... or Honda ad execs were tone deaf... probably both.

They do, but the tones are all off. It's dreadful. Someone did not use the maths very well.
