New gamers?

They started a board gaming club on campus last semester, and today the guy running it stopped by my office after I had asked him about it by e-mail. He said they get anywhere from four to twelve folks every Thursday night and invited me to join them. He said they played Monopoly and Risk and Clue, so I asked him if anybody played any German-style boardgames.

"What are those?" he asked.

Excuse me while I rub my hands together gleefully...

Alas, most of my better games are still in SD, but I've got Management Material, Zombie Fluxx, Terra Nova, Tiki Mountain, Dread Pirate and a couple otheres to get me started, plus this might be the excuse I needed to pick up a few more that I'd been wanting to get anyway, so...

I was introduced to it by my friend thomasm when I was living in San Diego, and got to learn quite a few of the good ones. I've got a list at boardgamegeek.com. :)

Perhaps a board game primer might be in order?

Methinks so! I think Carcasonne might be a good "gateway game," but they play Apples to Apples which is a good lead-in to other card games. I may break down and get one of the train games (Ticket to Ride, Transamerica) since my Carcasonne is still in San Diego.

Or, a board game primer for your LJ readers. I have no idea what you just said.

I just wrote a REALLY long-winded reply, so I'm making it my next entry instead. :)

I have my own collection of traditional games just for the hell of it (who doesn't love Clue, especially the new Harry Potter version which I need to get that includes an in-board wheel which changes the secret passages like the stairways at Hogwarts?). I also have TWO gay versions of Monopoly - the 1983 one that was put out of print by Milton Bradley, and the original Gayopoly with both gay men and lesbian sides. :)

But, yeah, Puerto Rico is more fun. :)
