Writer's Block: Doctor Who?

26-year-old actor Matt Smith was anointed as the eleventh Doctor Who this week. If you were in charge of casting, who would you cast as your ideal Doctor and why?

Colin Salmon

He played Dr. Moon in two episodes of Doctor Who ("Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead"), and I was really taken with him. I also remember his intensity in Alien vs. Predator and the James Bond movies he was in (Die Another Day, The World Is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies). He's got an impressive acting resume, and I think he would have made a wonderful Doctor (and I know he was named as a possible candidate at one point).

Lots of good suggestions (I particularly enjoyed the thought of James Marsters in the role, or Ewan McGregor, or Simon Pegg). I hope Matt Smith is up to the challenge!

Tennant provided plenty IMHO, so I'm more of a mind to return to a more serious Doctor (not that Tennant couldn't pull it off when necessary). I enjoyed Atkinson in "Curse of Fatal Death," but I don't think he'd make a good long-term Doctor in the series.

Oh yes, he'd be quite excellent. Someone else mentioned Roger Rees, who I also think would have been excellent.
