A tribute

Just wanted to say Happy Veteran's Day to both our loved ones who are serving or have served, and those of us who support them from home. It's truly a day to appreciate the sacrifices we've all made (and six months in the sandbox was quite enough for me, thank you!).

It's a major event up here. There were events downtown and in the capital, and Canadian officials attending events in Europe.

Canada sent a tenth of its population to World War I, and a very large number of us died. Every year, the names of everyone who died in that war are read out again from the peace tower on Parliament Hill. This year, they had a symbolic passing of the torch from our last living World War I veteran through the younger veterans.

I read an interesting article about a photographer who is desperately trying to photograph the last WWI survivors, and so far 8 out of 12 he's gotten have already died. It's kind of cool he's making the attempt.
