A nice happenstance today

I was walking back from lunch across campus today and happened to be passing under a long stone overpass, and a most peculiar smell met me. It's hard to describe - somewhat wet, but clean, plus the smell of people - but whatever it was it transported me elsewhere.

I suddenly found myself walking through New Orleans Square, leaving the Pirates of the Caribbean, just passing by the Blue Bayou, Pieces of Eight, and out towards the French Market.

It always amazes me how smells are the most potent sense to completely take me back to another time and place.

Yep -- there's a place around the office that sometimes fries food that makes me think of being at Disney World. Ok, so it's a bit sad that it's the smell of fried food that does that for me.

Nah, it's legit. Woodsmoke takes me directly to Pennsic.

There's a link between smell and memory that's very powerful. It's kind of nice, actually. :)

I get a music-smell combo. When I hear The Promise by When in Rome, I'm immediately transported to an afternoon spent at my friend Chris's house a la 1988 (or '89).

His parents and siblings were out of town and we spent the day goofing off with the doors and windows open, music blaring. We ordered pepperoni pizza and enjoyed it on the porch swing while watching the neighbor drive in yard-sized circles with a riding mower.

The Promise by When in Rome = The scents of Pizza Hut Pepperoni pizza + freshly cut grass.

Weird, I know.

I really wish I could find the paper now, but I recall reading some time ago that scent memory is actually the strongest memory we have; even more acute than visual or aural.

And, yeah. I know exactly the scent you're talking about. There's another scent that I can't quite define that throws me right back to long nights working at Carnation Plaza Gardens.

It's not as bad as you might think...and probably worse than you think it is.

Absolutely nothing compares to the sewage stink that lived right behind Candy Palace though, I tell you what.

It's weird, I can't even describe it myself. I guess it is kind of a "had to be there" thing.

I'll think of you next time I'm there, but you really need to come out and experience it again for yourself!!!!!

I've never been to disneyworld. I've wanted to go for a long time though, it's just really pricey. So E and I asked for a trip for Christmas this year... we're tired of other expenses coming up and ruining our chances to go. I actually thought about skipping Pennsic for Disney.

and woodsmoke does take me straight back to Pennsic, just like honeysuckle takes me right back to my grandmother's back yard.
