I'm so very, very excited that joeyhemlock is discovering the joys of geeky gaming through some of his local friends. His list of games he's trying for the first time reads exactly like our list of regular choices on Wednesday nights as we peruse through my and thomasm's gaming libraries - Settlers of Catan, Shadows Over Camelot, Ticket to Ride, Hoity Toity, Carcassonne, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gang of Four, Acquire, Bang!, Munchkin... the list goes on and on, and it just tickles me pink that other people enjoy it as much as we do. (Our regular gaming group includes minotaurs, adventdragon, paranoyd, writethewrongs, lenniersd, and our non-LJ friends Bill and Kevin, plus every once in a great while caprine and agt.)

At Joey's recommendation, actually, last night we tried Nodwick and most of us really enjoyed it, although there was some confusion over how exactly to play the timer, and why exactly its function is. Hopefully he'll enjoy some of the recommendations I've made to him, mostly from my games wish list, which is sorely in need of updating as I've added a few and have even more I want - I really should start a list on boardgamegeek.com).

He did point me to the fact that you can play Ticket to Ride online which I wasted some time at work playing today. Keen!

Oh, and new iconage to boot. :)

Otherwise, not much. It's been a very busy week with two new team members starting Monday and Thursday, then Pride this weekend, then I leave for Pennsic next weekend. Ugh. But it's all good, 'cause it's my annual battery recharge and all. I'm looking forward to a lower drama quotient this year, hopefully. :)

At Pennsic? Is that even possible? Hell, is that even *legal* at Pennsic?

Last year we had MUCH drama, causing a schism in the encampment. (And, as we like to say, whenever two or more gay men congregate, eventually there WILL be a schism.) And, of course, rather than actually going off and doing their own thing, the group that split off from has has decided to camp right next door. Yeah, THAT'S mature. Ugh. So, we've extended an olive branch that has been accepted, so we're hoping there will be no animosity (for truly, them splitting off was the best possible thing that could have happened, and 99% of us know that, so we're hoping the other 1% catch up before too long).

I figure the first major all-encompassing encampment drama in 16 years is pretty good. :)

Somehow I find the fact that drama seems to follow you strangely unsurprising... :)

(Seriously, have fun at Pennsic, I know how much you look forward to it.)

Actually it followed my War husband - I just got pulled along for the ride. Ugh.

Of course this year we have much larger drama dealing with the placement of camps on our block and some obstinate groups who have a false sense of entitlement, but that's another story entirely. :D

You're not the only one with new iconage

Darth Darth Revolution!

I resent living so far from you board game geeks.

I must admit it's going to be one of the things I miss most when I move to Maryland, 'cause I'm guessing there aren't a lot of gamer geeks in middle of nowhere.

ashoemaker are you listening? I think our friend here needs to be hooked up with the NoVa Spielers! :)

Seriously, I know at least two people who will be in that area who were in the gaming club we founded at VT. They're still moving, but they'll be in the DC/metro area.

Which is great, except we'll be far from the DC/metro area. I know there are gamers around, just not close enough for a weekly game night. :(

Maryland isn't THAT big, where are you going to be???

Suggestion withdrawn. Move back to civilization soon!
Jul. 29th, 2005 06:33 pm (UTC)
Yeah, really. :( 1.5 hours to DC, 2 hrs to Baltimore. Blah.

I must do games soon. I'm not sure what possessed me yesterday but I ordered Ticket to Ride: Europe, Niagra, Shadows Over Camelot, Candamir: the First Settlers and the Puerto Rico expansion yesterday. I haven't played them, but they're all from designers I trust (or are the 2005 Spiel des Jahres winner). Guess it's time for a game night.

... well, "soon" being "when I manage to find a weekend not otherwise occupied", which at this point isn't actually in the next few weeks ...
Jul. 29th, 2005 06:23 pm (UTC)
Aw, poor boo. You should come down and game with us sometime!
Jul. 29th, 2005 06:33 pm (UTC)
Mostly it's the fact that all my weekends are committed (in some form or other) until Labor Day. I have people I can invite over, just no time.

I'm not worried, though. I'll get to play soon enough.

I mean when you do get a free weekend, come down to our place new gamers, new games, and I know you'd have a blast.
