PLing the night away...

Not only did I ding 30 tonight (finally!) but big, BIG thanks to Evil Rage on Liberty for asking me to anchor for him for a few missions, which got me to 31 after just a few missions! w00t! Plus I finally got back up to a million influence to boot.

(It's kind of cool to PL once in a while, especially since I've been finding it hard to team lately, and since I wasn't going around begging "PL MEH PLZ!" and he actually felt I was helping him out, it was a nice deal all around.)

Now it's off to do my aura mission...

I am almost always willing to team/group. Just find me online and send me a tell.

Honey, I know who YOU are, I just don't know which heroes you play. :)

Okay now, I'm assuming this is CoH right? I confess I have no idea what PL is... care to enlighten me?

And how in the world did you get up to a million inf? I have trouble holding onto mine because single-origin enhancements are so bloody expensive!

Yes, City of Heroes, and PL stands for "power levelling," which basically means hanging out with someone higher than you and leeching off of them for XP - sometimes it's intentional, like this guy who just wanted 4 or 5 of us to hang out in the mission he was running not to fight, but just to make the mobs bigger. I was getting MAD XP out of it, and didn't fight any baddies to do it.

Unfortunately PLing has a bad rep because newbies come on and scream over the broadcast channel "PL MEH PLZ" and everybody gets annoyed. PLing isn't a way of life, but it can help from time to time.

I haven't had the experience at all, really... every time I've joined a group I've had to do my share of fighting. :) I've been in some really good groups though, and have a number of online friends I play with - but I've never done this power-leveling of which you speak. Of course, I'm only level 25 and it takes me forever to level up, so maybe I need to find this PL stuff! :)

Most players don't do it that often, but when the chance comes along it's hard to resist, especially if you're frustrated and just can't seem to get to that next level. 98% of the time, yeah, you're fighting as a team.

Sometimes people will pay you influence to anchor for them - you don't actually go to the mission, you can go do your own thing, but you stay on the team and it generates bigger mobs for the team or hero that's actually doing the fighting.

Oh, and one of the perks of PLing is mad influence. Plus, I've won a few costume contests here and there. You'll get there eventually.

of course I also have some SO's that are turning yellow on me, so I'm sure I'm going to blow most of it getting back in the green, but it's fun to say, "I'm rich!" :D

Awesome! And I know how hard it is to finally get to 50. I'm glad you didn't miss the fireworks show when you did, though. :)

Is there a technical difference between anchoring and bridging? I hear both terms bandied about but I'm not sure if there's a difference.

I've often told people that the best way to get good XP is to team with people 2-4 levels higher than you without sidekicking - you can still get in on the action, but the baddies aren't so far out of your range that one hit will do you in, and you get MAD xp. I hadn't realized that "bridging" involved you actually SKing through other folks who were in turn lower than the highest hero. Very interesting. I guess that means anchoring is actually more like filling - being a part of the team to make the mobs bigger/harder but not actually doing any fighting (unless anchoring is when you've actually IN the mission and get the XP, while filling is when you're on the team but don't actually get the XP for it).

All these terms. Ugh.

And what's wrong with filling an available... team? :P

As long as you're not begging for it, no one seems to mind, and those that want the bigger mobs are grateful to have a few people on board, so it's all good. I don't feel I'm missing too much content by skipping from 30 to 31 in one night. :)

What do you think the best way is of finding people willing to do this? On my server (Virtue) I don't have a lot of options; broadcast or advertisement notices about wanting to team don't seem to work much, setting Team to available helps a little. I've tried to congregate around busy areas (since I'm a level 25, the busiest area for me is the rail station in Talos Island).

I've always had a sneaking suspicion I play CoH the 'hard way', taking forever to level and single-origin enhances that cost me up the yang. (BTW I'm Electrolyte on Virtue...)

I like the Virtue server, so many people I know have characters on it. I'm really intrigued by this PL thing, too... as it stands, it takes me weeks to level up! (Mostly because I tend to solo quite a bit, and I'm an explorer so I like to scout around and see what I find.) I have the added problem of being a Blaster, who are naturally the easiest ones to kill, so I have to be conservative as to which mobs I pick on. :) (Thankfully release 5 will compensate for blasters' low defense!)

I am currently in a GLBT supergroup on Virtue that isn't as busy as it used to be...

I get a lot of blind invites, but it also has to do with what kind of hero you are - healers (not necessarily any defender, mind you) are always in demand, as are tanks, and scrappers and blasters to a lesser extent, and I find people (wrongfully) ignore controllers and non-healer defenders.

It also doesn't hurt to be proactive - send people a /tell directly and ask them if they're looking for a team if you have a good mission to do.
