Starting a website

Since I have so many geeky friends, can anyone recommend a good company to register a domain and/or host a website? Quincy wants a better showcase for his artwork and has a neat idea to start an online community for some like-minded artists. Since I'm his manager I have to figure these things out, and since there are soooooo many choices I figure recommendations would be the best way to go.

Thanks for any advice!

pair for your hosting needs, pairNIC to register the domain name.

K and I have been on pair for a few years now.

Setting up an interactive community website, though, is a bit tricky and a fair amount of programming. I was experimenting with Drupal, and there's no real way to do it without the programming.

Before throwing too much money or work at the issue, get Q on a paid livejournal account so he can better customize his journal, get him a DeviantArt account so he can host his pictures, and get him updating both of those on a regular basis. Cheap and easy.

I know another artist (akirashima) that uses DeviantArt, so maybe I'll see if that's a good first step. I know he really does want to create a community, and I realize that's much more of a bigger step. Thanks!

Does this mean Margibtinlin.com will finally come to fruition?

If this goes well, maybe it will. :)

godaddy.com for domain registration, as for hosting - it really depends on what he wants to do with the site. Give me a call, we'll talk.

Ah, that's right - you know these things, too. :) The Network has a domain registered through godaddy, so at least I've seen they work.

Doteasy.com is the one I went through. Somewhere in the vicinity of $25/year for hosting and domain registration. You only get 100MB of space, but you can always buy more.

I don't know how long that would last if he's looking at creating a community of artists showing off their stuff, but it's an idea. Thanks!

For what it's worth, if you like to support friends, Bob has a hosting company and can register a domain name for you as well. Look at http://www.batchhost.com for pricing info. Domain name registration is a mere $9.99/year. And I get to be your rep! No kickbacks to me sadly, but it does mean he has more money to spend on my kids.

Keeping it in the (extended) family might not be a bad idea! I'll definitely keep that in mind. Does he have info on the website on fees and things?

I see he does. I'll keep it in mind. Thank you!

yup - fees and things are on the webpage, though it's currently not setup to handle on-line payments.
