Enjoyed my somewhat free day today by taking an extended lunch and getting some Christmas shopping done, which was mostly DVDs at Target. I also sent out a few Christmas cards. Go me! (Oh, and I even got some actual work done to boot.)
My good sister called and reminded me that each of us is getting Mom 4 gifts, since Dad always got her 12 (one for each month of the year), and we tell her they're from him (we did this last year, too).
My evil sister called with another idea for a gift for Mom - each of us is going to frame a copy of our eulogies for Dad. I thought that was a nice idea. And while my niece Mindy knew exactly what she wanted me to get her for Christmas, my nephew Spencer was clueless (so cute).
Finally Mom called. She was having an up and down day. First she found out that Best Buy doesn't make ovens that fit where her old oven was so she decided to cancel the order, but not before lambasting them for trying to charge her $40 to come out and measure the space (she even cancelled her new credit card with them over it), and she was pretty proud of herself that she got out of it. Then she found out one of her oldest friends, Joe, who (if I remember correctly) was her first boss at her first job at the Port Authority has just been put on a morphine drip and isn't expected to last long. He's I guess in his early 80's and has been battling various cancers over the past several years, but finally they ran out of options so he's been living his life (pretty actively, actually) and now it's finally caught up to him, unfortunately. So although she and my good sister tried to get some Christmas shopping in today it just wasn't happening.
After lunch I was asked to host the holiday pot luck and white elephant party tomorrow at work, which I happily accepted. I'm not sure which set of rules I want to use yet. (Steal a gift only 3 times? Indefinitely? Steal from any single person only 3 times? Open a present first and swap or steal without opening?) Regardless, I predict it will be tons o' fun. I never did tell them what I was bringing though - hmmm. I'll have to run out in the morning and buy something at Ralphs.
After work I went to Michael's and got some lovely gifts and ideas for gifts, all very nice and remarkable affordable. Very proud of myself. Between this and the gifts I've already gotten people over the course of the year I'd say I'm about 2/3 done. This weekend I'd like to hit North County Fair, Mission Valley Mall and, if possible, the Asian import store on Convoy, and then I think I'll be done (although I may wait on a few items and pick them up once I'm home so I don't have to worry about lugging them on the plane).
Talked to Quincy, as usual. He is a big dork, but that's not news. Can't wait to see him - 6 days! w00t!
