Yep, read it last week. My chorus email list has been fighting about it ever since.

Hooray for making people think!

Um, kinda. There is a LOT of anti-Kramer backlash going on in the email exchange, which makes me angry.

Yeah, 'cause you know, he has no idea what he's talking about. ::rolling eyes::

I skimmed it a while back, and it looked like more typical Larry Kramer complaining. I've not been able to take that man seriously for several years now, no matter his message. He's far too bitter and has an image of what gay people should be like that is incompatible with my life.

What good parts of the message there may be, someone else needs to be saying it. Just not Larry. Anything he says is (IMHO justifiably) dismissed by the mainstream gay movement.

No offense, but you are one of the reasons that HIV is still a problem today.

You don't know a thing about me, and you come to this conclusion?

Hm.

People who bitch about Larry Kramer and say "oh, it's not me that's being negative and hateful" contribute to the belief that Kramer doesn't have any idea what he's talking about, when he's usually the only sane one of us all.

If Larry is the only sane one, feel free to lock me up in an insane asylum.

You know nothing about what I've done to help slow the spread of AIDS. You know nothing about the work I've done with gay youth, the work I've done to promote AIDS education in the community, and nothing about the activism I've done to get money for AIDS research and education out of the government.

But since I can't deal with Larry's hyper-hyperbolic, highly vitrolic message, I'm working against stopping AIDS.

Right.

My point is everyone has the same goal. Infighting does NOTHING. Attacking Larry does NOTHING.

Neither does saying that gay people are better than other people, nor calling people who do not act in a manner acceptable to Larry traitors to being gay. I don't deal with intolerant people well, whether they are part of the gay community or outside of it.

As I said before, Larry has some good points in his message. But someone other than Larry needs to be saying them.

You should tell that to the 900 people who heard his speech, or the 400 who couldn't even get in. Whether you like him or not, Larry Kramer is a leader, and a damn good one.

Leader or motivator?

And frankly, how you can expect someone not to be offended when you say such things is beyond me.

The point is, I don't care if you're offended. I know of at least 5 people who have seroconverted THIS YEAR. Do you know how ridiculous that is?

If you don't care who you offend, you should not start your responses with "No offence..."

Yes, I agree it's ridiculous.

Did I cause them to sero-convert? Why are you blaming me?

I hate reading things like this, on any subject, because a) I know he's right (pace exaggerations for effect), b) I know he's right that it's an emergency and the storm is coming, c) I know nothing will be done, because d) I, personally, don't know what to do, since e) whatever I do (education, activism, whatever) and don't do (not being a crystal queen/explicit or implicit bugchaser) is insufficient.

But dear, you DO things - that's what matters. Even Gandhi said we have to do small things in order to make big changes. The point is we ALL have to do something. Keep at it. You're making a difference.

Yeah, I know. I get like this sometimes... usually after reading something like that *sigh* Don't mind me.

It never seems like enough, but trust me, it is. Keep it up, hon.
