Disneyland happiness causes drowsiness...

So very tired today...

I stayed up way too late on Saturday, so was very tired when I got up Sunday morning. I was only a little late meeting Lyttle John at DCA, and we had a most wonderful day. We did:

  • MuppetVision 3-D
  • The Tower of Terror (my first time - once in the day, once at night)
  • Disney Animation
  • Mission Tortilla Factory
  • California Screamin' (once in the day, once at night)
  • Grizzly River Run (my first time, surprisingly)
  • Golden Dreams
  • Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular show (my first time)
  • Soarin' Over California
  • It's Tough To Be A Bug
We stopped for lunch at Paradise Pier, and John spent much time pin trading, looking for a specific pin (he stopped every cast member with a lanyard, and the very last one we saw he didn't bother to look, but I did and saw the very pin he'd been looking for all day!). We also saw lots of characters - Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Mulan, Mushu, Woody, Sulley, Roly Poly Olie, and a few others. Not bad for a park that initially had no Disney characters in it at all!

I noticed quite a few changes since I was last there (which I think was about a year ago), and it looks like overall they're working on some long-term projects to improve the place:

  • They replaced the soap opera store ("attraction") with Playhouse Disney, a kid's stage show (Olie, Bear in the Big Blue House, etc.).
  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Play It! is finally closed, but I don't know what's going in its place.
  • Superstar Limo is still closed, but they haven't done anything with that yet, either.
  • Hollywood & Dine, my favorite place to eat, looks like it's closed permanently, probably due to lack of traffic in that corner because Millionaire and Limo are dark. Hopefully they'll reopen it once they get some attractions back there.
  • The Tower of Terror is open, and is pretty great. The biggest difference between this one and the one at WDW is you no longer leave the elevator shaft and go across the floor to the front shaft that drops you - it all takes place in the same shaft you start in (although you do pull away from the doors after you board). They replaced it with a pretty keen computerized mirror effect, but it's not nearly as cool. The upside is because of that they managed to double their load capacity with 6 total elevators, which is a very smart move on their part. I can accept the change if it means riding it faster and/or more often.
  • A Bug's Land is also open, so I saw that for the first time. VERY well themed, even if it's only for kids. We were very amused.
  • The Aladdin show is still at Hyperion, and this was the first time I saw that, too.
  • They added a movie to the pre-show at Mission Tortilla, which was narrated by kids and quite amusing.
  • They added a "discover your animal counterpart" piece at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in the little walk-through cave. You put your hand against the pad, the rocks light up, and a little anime tells you who you are. Evidently, I'm a beaver. (No jokes - I could have been a skunk.)
  • Sadly the music on California Screamin' wasn't working, and it really changed the ride for me (not for the better). I'm hoping when they finish the refurb on Space Mountain the music is there.
  • They put in a coffee cart by Golden Dreams, which I don't remember seeing before.
  • There's a new Mexican restaurant in Downtown Disney, but I forget what was there before.
I'm sure jsciv will be along any minute to fill in details on all of these, plus I'll probably be making a stop at MousePlanet to get some backstory (and read more about the logistics behind Tower of Terror). :)

We wrapped up the evening by watching the Electric Light Parade (much to my surprise I didn't cry), and then headed to the Rainforest Cafe for dinner where i got to use my Safari Club membership for the first time to get seated right away and 10% off our bill (which we quickly used up by getting the Volcano for dessert - yum!). By the time I dropped off John it was almost 11:00, and I called Quincy back while driving home since he was having a bad night (got back from DC late and had lots to do for his inspection this morning, which is why he was still awake at such a late hour). I didn't get to bed until 1:00. UGH! So I may be exhausted today, but it was worth it to spend the day with John - we could dish about Disney stuff (he's putting in an application at WDW as soon as he gets back to NY) and Pennsic stuff!

Tonight it's dinner for nolly's birthday (hopefully I'll be awake enough!), tomorrow I need to figure out my costume and do laundry, Wednesday is gaming, and Thursday night through Sunday night will be Conjecture. Whee!

Sure, ask and ye shall receive as much as my own exhausted brain can deal with for now. :)

Don't expect Hollywood & Dine to be back. Nor SS Limo. Nor Millionairre. They're pretty much done. But they're still trying to figure out what to do with the space. Everyeone wants to see a new E-ticket in there (something akin to Rock 'n Roller Coaster maybe), but the logistics of it with the existing stuff (notably confined vehicular access and this monorail thing that runs right through) seems to have made it unlikely that they'll announce anything soon (especially since all of the money right now is going to DL to make it all sparkly and shiny for it's 50th).

California Screamin' has music on all of the cars, but a couple of them are prone to drop out from time to time. If you don't get the music, well then you just have to ride again, right? :)

Tortilla Jo's is in the space where Y Arriba, Y Arriba used to be, although I forget what was there before that. It's an ill-fated space, but TJ's might have found the right combination of crowd-enticing and traffic control to make it work.

Oh I know Millionaire and Limo are long gone, but I wish they'd keep H&D just for the food - there's really not much to eat in Hollywood except hot dogs. Bleargh. H&D had what, four different kinds of food in one big place? I liked it much better than Pacific Wharf.

And isn't maseca the stuff they use for tortillas? (See? I learned something from the new video!)

Yes, it was Y Arriba Y Arriba - I'd forgotten. I think cheap Mexican food is a good fit for DTD since there's nowhere cheap to eat (except maybe the New Orleans express kitchen place - Stanton eats there all the time).

Well, I think they want the space for an attraction (and it's not like DCA even comes close to its capacity in food service), so H&D bought the farm. I only got to go there once, and I too liked the atmosphere. But I think that if they DO go with a cool attraction there, all will be forgiven. :)

Yes, I just really like the way the "boy as dog" says maseca in the video.

Actually, Tortilla Jo's has the cheap cafe out on the side, but it also has a dining room that's about the same price as all the other places. So it covers both. That's part of why I think they're onto a good operation there.

Re: ::SIGH::
Well get more money, then! :)

This weekend is Gay Days, too! Not that either of us need to pick up guys, but it's a great time to have (as they say) a gay old time at DL as far as hanging out and not feeling like a minority. The problem is (as user knows) that Conjecture is also the same weekend. But I have to do DL.

Um, yeah. I'm too tired to use LJ tags, apparently....

Re: ::SIGH::
Piffle. Conjecture is only once a year, but you can be gay at Disneyland any time.

But that's fine, I understand. I'm not important. No, no, go ahead. You have fun with your friends. I'll just stay here. Alone. That's ok. Really.

Re: ::SIGH::
You can be gay at DL any time, but you cannot be one of THE gays at DL any time! And don't forget the CHOC Walk on Sunday morning: gotta help the kiddies, and that's definitely only once a year.

Ahem: alone? Which definition of "alone" involves several hundred people enjoying your fabulous costume while you're on stage and running around with them before and after?

Alone. Yeah. :)

Re: ::SIGH::
No, no, that's ok. I understand I'm not important in the great grand scheme of your life. That's ok. Really. I'll be fine. Don't worry about me. No. Really.

{cough cough}

No, I'm fine. That's ok. You go ahead.

Re: ::SIGH::
Why do I have this sudden image of you in a colonial plantation house lying in your four-poster bed in a flowy white dressing gown, propped up by pillows with the back of your hand dramatically placed on your forehead, with the wind billowing all around you as you speak those lines in a rarified southern accent just before you are overcome by the vapours?

Re: ::SIGH::
Mine expired too, actually. Fortunately John's sister had one day left on a 5-day hopper pass, so I got in for free. I also have CM friends who sign me in from time to time. Eventually, though, I want to renew my AP.

I also noticed the $50 entrance fee for one park, and $70 for both. If they were smart they would make ALL one-day tickets for both parks, but then again Disney hasn't been a company that always does the smart thing.

Re: ::SIGH::
There didn't used to be a one-day pass for both. They're making progress.....

Re: ::SIGH::
I know, I know, but it should have been both parks for one price right from the start and I'll betcha DCA would have had somewhat smoother sailing. Hopefully these latest changes will improve things.

Re: ::SIGH::
You know something, I just realized that I have an Asian boyfriend too.... Duh.

Okay, so I know I've known that, but not really in those terms before until I was just thinking about you and your proclivities... it's not that I went for an Asian boyfriend, just that I ended up with one........
