In other news, weirdest thing coming in today - there was extremely little traffic, plus I saw there were half a dozen cars just abandoned by the side of the road, and a couple of them had their doors open. I kind of felt like there was some weird cosmic event and everyone stopped what they were doing to run see it, or aliens made a mass abduction or something. There were also four people who called out sick today, which is also pretty unusual. Did I miss the Rapture when I wasn't looking? :D (It did rain pretty hard last night!)
OK, three guys came into work today and they looked like they'd been in a bar fight. They were practically non-communicative, and the Director told them to go home, which they seemed to barely understand and they shuffled out. I think they might have been drunk, I'm not sure. VERY odd behavior for them - they're usually stand-up guys.
We've also been getting a flurry of calls from HR, the VP, and the Health Center for my boss. I think something weird is going on.
I'm reading a few other people's LJs and some weird stuff is going on in other places, too. I realize I don't know anyone else around my neck of the woods who is also on LJ, so it's hard for me to find out if I'm the only one who's noticing all this or not. I mean, the students are gone for the summer, but things still seem a little *too* quiet today (which I suppose I shouldn't argue with under ordinary circumstances, but it's just... *weird* today). And my boss just dashed out of here for an emergency meeting with the President and the Board, and I heard him talking about the current version of the campus pandemic plan. WTF?
I'm heading home for lunch in a few, and I'm wondering if I should even come back to work or not. There's this eerie kind of calm chaos going on, like a slow-motion fire drill with earmuffs on. Something is definitely going down, and it's *big*, but I still don't know exactly what it is. I'm going to watch the news at lunch to see if there's something going on in the area.
I blame the Navy, whatever it is. :D
OK, totally freaked out now.
Cops were out *everywhere* on the way back from lunch. I saw at least one bunch rushing into a house with guns drawn.
Several accidents, including pedestrians, but ambulances were on the serious scenes. I saw one EMT restraining someone to the cart to get them into the ambulance.
I get back to work just in time to get told everyone's been told to go home - except essential personnel, which I am. Lovely. They're saying there's some kind of illness or pandemic in the region and they're not taking any chances, so the less people congregate the better. (Fortunately the campus is mostly empty anyway, so it's not like it's some kind of huge evacuation or anything, it's just sending everyone home like the power had gone out or something.)
My boss is looking into specifically who has to stay and who has to go from our department. Since I answer the phones, I'll likely have to stay to help manage things, at least for a little while.
I'm calling Q to see what he's heard. I'm hearing *nothing* on the news, except for a local AM radio station that is broadcasting the Emergency Broadcast System signal and telling people to stay tuned.
County Health Department has issued a state of emergency.
I just heard the nuclear plant sirens go off.
We have been instructed to abandon the campus. I'll post once I get home.
holy mother of god this is wayo ut of control. Q is hoem and we are going ot make a break for it to try to makeit to philly to get my mom. right now the whole house is boarded up. were lucky we're on an end street and don't get a lot of people down our way but the few that have come visiting we managed to stave off. this is CRAZY BATSHIT INSANE. If anyone is in an affected area STAY INDOORS. people have LOST THEIR MINDS. hopefully we"ll be abel to get somewhere safe and i cna write again. BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!
