Costuming vs. Cosplay

What's the difference for you between costuming and cosplay?

Lately I've seen "cosplay" used almost exclusively to refer to any kind of costuming (re-creations, hall costuming, steampunk, etc.), but I see them as different. I'm curious what my other costuming friends think.

DISCUSS! :)

I think of "costuming" as being focused on the creation of the clothing, often with an emphasis on recreating details of a previously existing costume (e.g. a proper Starfleet uniform, or an elf costume as described in Tolkien's writings). "Cosplay" may include that, but also includes interest in roleplaying while wearing the costume -- but cosplayers may also purchase their costumes and not be involved in the creation of them.

Ah, that's an interesting point about self-creation vs. manufactured costumes.

I guess I really just don't want to be called a cosplayer, and it annoys me when traditional costumers are called cosplayers. :)
