I once stopped some mid-sentence when he started with, "I don't want to hurt you, but..." so I interrupted to say that if he really did not want to hurt me then he wouldn't finish that sentence.

Also, I think there is a huge semantic difference between the following three sentences:

"I love you but your shoes are untied."

"Your shoes are untied but I love you."

"I love you and your shoes are untied." ("Your shoes are untied and I love you" is nearly the same; perhaps slightly preferable.)

I LOVE the and/but substitution! It makes a world of difference when I hear it from others, and I hope it also does to people I talk to. I only use "but" when I really mean it now.

But what about if you are complimenting a Butt. i mean spelling is hardly a concern if you are saying it out loud
